Video Reflection 2: Story of Stuff, Electronic, Cosmetics and Bottled Water

I knew that we have used a lot of world resources but I did not realised until I watch the videos that 1/3 of the natural resources in the world was being consumed because we are using so much stuff.
In the video, Annie Leonard tells us about five stages of live cycle of a product. Those five stages are extraction, production, distribution, consumption and disposal. She stated that those stages could affect people in bad ways. Some fact stories made me realise that sometime people just doesn’t care about what they’re doing and just keep doing it to make money. For example, Producer make product to be useless as soon as possible so they can make new one and sell it to the consumer. Consumer might not realised that from the production produce toxic and pollution, so when there is a new product release they tend to change to the new one although the old one still perfectly useful. Although ‘green producers’ is already existed, a lot more company are just not interested to how the product is going to be recycled. Recycling is the best way to save the natural sources, even though recycling doesn’t get to the problem, but it is helpful rather than burning the unused products that produce dioxin.
It is surprising to know that every personal care products contain toxic, but not every ingredient is dangerous for us. It’s daily lotions, shampoo and cosmetics, but also baby products. We know that personal care products producers wanted to help us to look good on the outside but they forget to worry about consumer’s health impact. Although some of the products are responsible by selling save nontoxic products, we as consumers do not know the full impact of the ingredient that contain in the products we use.
As for the story of electronics, Annie Leonard said that each year we make 25millions of e-waste and the company tend to ‘Design for the Dump’. I realised how fast our electronic technology growing. We can’t really blame the producers because of that, the companies also need to earn for living. The thing that they shouldn’t forget is our resources and waste. I feel that the producer is not essentially produce a long lasting product but they need to mind the timing of their release of new product and just keep updating the software. I think it might give a big help to waste material rather than keep releasing new physical product every time.
The next video is about bottled water. I admit that I was a bottled water user in my country. It is not because I don’t realise the effect of bottle waste, in some country we just cant drink tap water as it can cause you stomach ache. Here in Australia I started to use tap water even I bring my own bottle water everywhere I go as I save more money and I noticed that it is not healthy to drink water that has been in the bottle for a long time.
I agree with water bottle boycott as it can help to reduce the waste and I don’t like the idea of recycling water bottle as the grade of the bottle is decreasing it’s not good for our body and it would be better if they can help some countries to provide clean water so we can consume water directly from the tap. I think it’s a good idea to provide a tap water filter to some area.
As a young designer I think we should care more to our environment and should contribute to it so our natural resources keep flowing. :)

[In Depth Post - 2] Misuse of Product by Young Children - Air Freshener

I was doing some more research for misuse of air freshener. I found a data record regarding the issue in 'Hospital and Nursing website' where around 95% of the accident happened to age range 0-5 years old.

In my first in depth post, I posted an example issue where a child hospitalised after mistaking air freshener as a bottle of juice. There is a story from a mom that her kid experienced the same thing. It was the air freshener with sticks in oil that cause the problem. Nowadays, we can find this type of air freshener easily in store. The air freshener that usually we place it on the table in our living room and in the kitchen.

Design Concept:

The concept is sticking to the original air freshener which still using the bamboo sticks. The oil bottle will have small tube on the back to rest the sticks.....

- The topic of the project is valid but I have to find  what the packaging look like that cause the problem. and there were already several packaging similar to the packaging concept that I made and I was doing different type of air freshener to the 'air freshener' that cause the problem.

• Felicia Sutandar
"The air freshener is a good concept with clearly addressed social issue. The way the packaging built itself is interesting, giving a new way of to package. But then, an improvement of the way it secure the product inside is necessary. The way it open might be different, but still easy enough for a child to open."

• Priska Effendy
"The Packaging would not lead children to think that the air freshener are candies. However there is a security problem where the children could open the package easily."

[In Depth Post] Misuse of Product by Young Children - Air Freshener

There are products that are designed to be used by adults, those products can turn unsafe when used incorrectly especially by young children. Misuse of products can cause poisoning, injury, death or property damage. Even tough a warning has been stated in the package of the product, most of young children cannot yet read and most of them have habit to put anything into mouth.
There was a case where three children in New York mistaking air freshener for candy because the air freshener is packaged in a bag similar to candy snacks.

There is another misuse case of air freshener where a two year old was hospitalised after swallowing an air-freshening product.

Air fresheners are usually stored in the kitchen, bathroom, living room and even in the car, contain formaldehyde, petroleum distillates, p-dichlorobenzene, and aerosol propellants. It can irritate eyes, skin, and throat. In a study published last year in Environmental Health, women who use more household cleaning products, like air fresheners, doubled their risk of breast cancer.

and here is another example of air freshener that resembles candies in a jar

Video Reflection: Giving Packaging a New Life and How It's Made: Packaging

The videos are about manufacturing packaging with different materials and various recycling process. I think the videos are useful for increasing our awareness, it made me realized the importance of sustainability. As a young designer we have to be aware with our environment to keep the resources running in for our future generations and to minimalist the effect on our earth. Although in some areas sustainable living has become the new trend in lifestyle choices, not many of us know how the recycling process can create a new product.  According to the Giving Packaging a New Life videos, recycled paper contributes around 60% in making new paper, 80% of the glass material is recycled and recycled steel gives around 40% of the raw material.

From the videos, I learnt that producing and recycling process required a lot of energy and material, with increasing people awareness to this subject is essential.  I believe that when people who don’t know about sustainable living to realize the importance of recycling, we can increase the percentage of re-usage material more than listed above. It has to start from the materials that people frequently use, for example paper and plastic. In many supermarkets (such as Coles and Woolworths), they encourage us as a consumer to use eco friendly bag instead of plastic bag to help reducing plastic waste.
The sorting process of materials got my attention. The process is interesting how the machine is able to sort materials which one will be able to get recycled and vice versa.  This machine is really helpful for recycling process, as sometime people do not care which trash bin their waste should go.

In conclusion, after watching the videos, I learnt new things. I realized that each material has different characteristics that led to different processes of manufacturing and recycling. I’d recommend people to watch the videos so that they can help to contribute for future generations needs.
