[PROJECT 3] POSTER AND TECHNICAL DRAWING

POSTER

TECHNICAL DRAWING

RATIONALE

LOCATION and PROBLEM:

This playground slide is designed for John Shore Park. It is a park that is located near Maroubra beach and close to two primary schools. The park does not have a bench or playing equipment. This park is basically an empty space, but after the school hours, kids play around in this park. While the kids playing around the park after school hours, their parents were just standing on the side of the park chatting to the other parents.

SOLUTION and DESIGN:

By looking at the problem of the park, the solution would be designing bench or playground equipment that kids can play with it. This furniture concept is combining bench and playground slide that everyone from kids to adult can use it. The design is inspired from Kumo baby crib design, the crib has a unique shape and it is built from many layers.
The new playground slide has 4 levels; on the first to third level it can be used for people to sit on it and the top level is the slide. The top level is the slide platform for the transition from standing to sitting at the top of the inclined sliding surface while the bottom of the sliding surface is the sliding exit region to help children maintain their balance and facilitate a smooth transition from sitting to standing when exiting. Handrail is provided along the walking and standing areas of the slide to provide hand support and to steady the user and to prevent kids from climbing up the slide from the side to get to the top. This slide has soft and rounded edges to prevent injuries that could result from impact with a sharp or straight edge. The design is also strengthen the idea of children supervision by parents while the kids play.

MATERIAL, MANUFACTURING PROCESS and INSTALATION:

This slide will be made out of high-density polyethylene plastic. It is strong, excellent scratch resistance, easy to clean, Weather resistant (UV Stabilized), easy to machine with standard tooling and no moisture absorption.
The slide will be using rotational molding technique to manufacture. Each part of the slide is formed by powdered HDPE plastic material in heated molds, which are rotated simultaneously in two planes perpendicular to each other. The plastic particles make contact and melt on the inner surfaces of the hot molds and fuse in layers until all the powder is fused and the desired end product and wall thickness is obtained. The slide is stress-free because the parts are produced without any external pressure.
For the installation, the slide parts will be joined using bolts from the inside part to prevent entangling children’s clothing and people might unscrew the bolt. There will be a soft-fall rubber underneath the slide where children may fall to reduce any injury related from falling onto hard ground.

[PROJECT 3] FINAL MODEL AND MODEL MAKING

FINAL DESIGN

MODEL MAKING

1. Blue foam cutting

2. Polyfilla layering

3. Spray Painting

[PROJECT 3] Peers Feedback 3

Alyana Agda :

- The form is good, maybe make it wider.
- About the area maybe need to scope out a new site

Marcus Lee:

I like the integration of the seating and play area. It is simple but effective. It strengthens the idea of children supervision by parents while they play. Maybe make the edges nice and soft to make it look more inviting and playful.

Tutors Feedback

Tom:

- Search more about the material and the manufacturing process
- Rounded edges

Simon:

- The slide looks plain compared to the other slide.
- Just put one colour

[PROJECT 3] CONCEPT 2

Inspiration:
(KUMO baby crib)

Design Concept:

Combining bench and playground slide in one furniture with the design concept like the image above. the design will have 4 level where people can seat on the first to the third level and the slide is located in the forth level. The height of each level is 400mm. there will be a small 200mm step on each level to help little kid to climb to top.
for the safety there will be handrail along the steps to the slide to prevent kids climbing from the left and right side. thus, if the kids want to play the slide they have to use the stairs.

SIZE: 4level
height each level 400mm
top level 300mm (total 1500mm)
length 3050mm
wide max 1400
